Will YOUR data be used to train Meta’s AI?

The Meta Group, operator of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, will use its users’ data to train its AI. This will begin May 27th 2025.

Most people use at least one of services mentioned above, so the following information may also be relevant to you.

Meta will soon begin using user data for AI training purposes. This applies to the following content:

  • Public content from your posts on Facebook and Instagram (such as posts, photos and captions), unless visibility has been restricted for others in individual cases
  • Interactions with third-party public content (e.g. ‘Likes’ on posts, reviews on Marketplace)
  • All use of Meta AI

The following applies to the use of WhatsApp:

  • The content of your chats with other people will not be used for AI training.
  • If you use Meta AI in WhatsApp, this data will be used for training. You cannot object to this use, you can only decide to ‘simply not use’ the service.

All new entries will be analyzed, as well as all existing data.

If you use Facebook or Instagram and do not want your data to be used for AI training purposes, you can object.

On the webpage of the Data Protection Authority of Iceland, you can find instructions for how to object:

Incidentally, Meta provides you with a text field where you can enter the reasons for your objection, but you can leave this blank: you do not have to give reasons for your objection.

If you submit your objection after May 27th, it will only apply to the future and not to data that has already been processed in the past.

Summary:
You should object as soon as possible if you do not want data from your Facebook and Instagram accounts to be used to train Meta AI. And do not use Meta AI in WhatsApp.
